# How Much Does an AI Agent Cost? Real Numbers (2026)

Having an AI agent built typically costs €1,000 to €25,000+ upfront, plus €100 to €1,500 per month. In the European market a focused SMB agent runs €2,500 to €8,000; complexity, integrations and low-code versus custom code set the price.

There is a question that keeps coming back on Reddit: "my demo cost €3 in tokens, so why would production suddenly cost €30,000 a month?" It is a fair worry, because most pricing pages only tell you what the build costs. Not what you pay afterwards, not what you actually own when it is done, and not when the cheap option turns out to be the expensive one. This guide covers all three, with published market data and the real numbers from a real client.

We are a Netherlands-based agency that [builds production AI agents](https://www.whatsnext-ai.com/ai-agents) in code, so the figures below are European market data in euros. The cost logic translates directly to any market; US development rates typically run higher.

### What does an AI agent cost, according to the market?

For this guide we compared the price lists that six AI providers publish themselves (checked July 2026). These ranges are market data, not our own rate card:

- Simple agent (one task, no integrations): €900 to €5,000
- Process agent (multiple steps, CRM or ERP integration): €2,500 to €8,000
- Complex agent or multi-agent platform (multiple systems, production requirements): €6,000 to €25,000+

Two agents that look identical on a demo call can differ in price by a factor of five. The cost drivers section below explains why, and further down we run the math with real numbers from our client JustCarpets: a factor of 100, from around €5.00 to €0.05 per resolved ticket. First, the part almost nobody puts numbers on: the monthly bill.

### What are the monthly costs of an AI agent?

Budget €100 to €1,500 per month all-in for a focused SMB agent. This is where buyers have the most anxiety and vendors publish the least, so here is how that range breaks down, from published market data and our own hosting practice (we host the agents we build):

- LLM API costs (tokens per conversation): €20 to €500 per month, driven by volume and model choice. Picking GPT, Claude or Gemini has direct price impact; current token prices are on the official pricing pages of [OpenAI](https://openai.com/api/pricing/) and [Anthropic](https://www.anthropic.com/pricing).
- Hosting and infrastructure: €50 to €500 per month for a production environment. Not shared hosting.
- Monitoring, updates and iteration: €100 to €1,000 per month, depending on the maintenance level you agree.

And about that Reddit fear: a €3 demo does not automatically scale to €30,000 a month. Token costs follow your volume. An agent with a tight scope and a few hundred conversations per month stays at the bottom of that range.

### Custom code vs. low-code: the comparison nobody gives you

In short: a low-code agent costs €1,000 to €5,000 upfront but carries a high rebuild risk and no ownership; a custom-coded agent costs €6,000 to €25,000+ and transfers full IP ownership to you. None of the price guides we analysed in July 2026 covers this split, and it is the single most important cost decision you will make.

A low-code agent (built on n8n, Make or similar) costs €1,000 to €5,000 to stand up. That is genuinely cheaper. But you own no code, you are tied to the platform, integrations break on updates, and maintenance comes on top of your licence fees. The pattern we keep seeing in practice: rebuilt within twelve months. One example from our own pipeline: Root Sustainability came to us after a stalled self-build attempt and signed a €7,500 custom project within three weeks. The first attempt was not free; it had already been paid for in time.

A custom-coded agent costs more upfront: €6,000 to €25,000+. In return you get an agent that is yours. In our model that means: we host it in our environment, you own the full IP, and it is transferable on demand. No licence costs that grow with you, no platform holding your workflow hostage.

The cheaper option is rarely the cheapest solution. Model both routes over 24 months, including the rebuild risk, before you decide.

### When does an AI agent pay for itself?

The rule of thumb from our projects: a focused AI agent pays for itself within one to three quarters. A worked example with real numbers. [JustCarpets](https://www.whatsnext-ai.com/cases/just-carpets), an e-commerce company, paid around €5.00 per support ticket in human handling. After we built a coded support agent: about €0.05 per resolved ticket, a factor of 100 lower, with the agent handling the ticket types that previously consumed the most manual time.

JustCarpets is custom work at enterprise scale. For an SMB situation you scale the principle down; the math stays the same:

It works on the revenue side too. [CIRFOOD](https://www.whatsnext-ai.com/cases/how-cirfood-scaled-from-4-to-45-tenders-a-year-without-adding-headcount) used a tender agent to go from 4 to 45 tender submissions a year, across both government and private tenders and with the same team, cutting preparation time from ten days to about two minutes per tender. Same kind of investment, aimed at growth instead of savings.

### What drives the price? The four cost drivers

- Complexity and number of integrations. An agent that answers questions is a different machine from an agent that writes invoices into your ERP or creates orders in your CRM. Every integration adds build and test time.
- Reliability requirements. An [AI agent](https://www.whatsnext-ai.com/glossary/ai-agent) that acts autonomously must be able to detect and recover from its own errors. Production quality costs more than a prototype, and it should.
- Data quality. A messy CRM means extra work before the build starts. Clean data means a faster, cheaper implementation.
- Scope discipline. The biggest overruns come from growing wish lists, not from technology. A fixed scope with a sharply defined first deliverable keeps the price predictable.

### IP ownership and lock-in: the hidden cost item

The question you should ask every vendor: what does it cost me to leave?

With SaaS agents and low-code platforms you pay monthly but own nothing. Stop paying and your agent stops existing. If the vendor pivots, that is your problem. This is not scaremongering; it is a risk item you should price in, like insurance or notice periods.
